Our candles are hand-poured using natural soy wax and pure essential oils. To enjoy a clean, even burn, and beautiful fragrance every time, it's important to follow a few simple steps. From trimming your wicks to knowing when to say goodbye, these tips will help you get the very best from every burn.
1 / Trim the wick before each burn
Give your candle a little TLC before each burn by trimming the wick to 5mm. Keeping the wick short helps the flame stay at just the right size and ensures a clean, even burn. When the wick is too long, the flame can burn too hot, causing shooting and an uneven melt. A quick trim makes all the difference for a beautiful, even burn every time.
2 / Light in a well-ventilated room
For the best burn, place your candle in a well-ventilated room away from drafts, vents or breezes. This helps the flame stay steady, which means less smoke, no messy drips, and a more even melt. And don't forget to pop your candle in a heat-resistant holder to keep things safe and secure while you enjoy the scent and wellbeing boost.
3 / Establish a good melt pool
When you light your candle for the very first time, give it a little extra time to work its magic. Let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach as close to the edges of the jar as possible. This helps create what's called a 'melt pool' and sets the stage for an even burn every time.
4 / Avoid tunnelling & wonky wicks
Candles have memories, and if the wax only melts in a small circle during the first burn, it can cause tunnelling, where the candle burns straight down and leaves unused wax around the sides. This can also cause the wick to lean over. Don't worry if it doesn't quite reach the edge on the first time, it will catch up on the next burn. A little patience now means a longer-lasting, better-burning candle later!
5 / The four hour rule
To keep you safe and your candle performing at its best, it's important not to let it burn for too long in one go. We recommend burning our small candles for no more than two hours at a time, and our medium/large candles for up to four hours.
Why? Burning a candle for too long can cause the container to overheat, the wick to become unstable, and the flame to become too large and a bit too lively - all of which increase the risk of shooting or even fire hazards. Shorter, mindful burns not only keep things safe but also help your candle to last longer. It's all about creating cosy, mindful moments safely!
6/ Give your candle space
Give your candle a little breathing room! Always leave at least 10cm (around 4 inches) between burning candles to let the air circulate and flames flicker safely. And be sure to keep them away from shelves or enclosed spaces above - heat rises, and we want to avoid the risk of overheating. A clear, open space is best for a safe, happy burning.
7 / Keep your candle free of debris
Keep your candle at its best by checking for any debris before each burn. Removing any bits like wick trimmings or match ends helps prevent unexpected flare-ups or secondary ignitions. Little extras in the wax can act as a second wick, and make your candle burn too quickly or unevenly. A clean melt pool = a longer-lasting, safer candle.
8 / Extinguish large flames
It's perfectly normal for your candle's flame to change a little during the different stages of its burn. But if you notice the flame becoming too large, smoky or flickering a lot, it's time to extinguish it and allow it to cool before trimming to 5mm and relighting.
9 / Keep wicks upright and centred
After burning your candle, always make sure the wick is upright and nicely centred before the wax cools. This will help it burn evenly and safely. And remember - never let the flame touch the side of the glass as this can cause it to overheat. A little care goes a long way to keep your candle burning beautifully.
10 / Enjoy mindful moments safely
Always place your candle on a flat, fire-resistant surface and keep it well away from anything that could catch alight. Never leave a lit candle unattended, and be sure to blow it out before heading to bed! And of course, keep candles out of reach of little ones and curious pets. A few simple steps help everyone enjoy mindful candlelit moments with peace of mind!
11 / Give your candle a little rest!
When you're not using your candle, pop the lid on and store it somewhere cool and dry. Keeping the lid on helps protect the wax from dust, which can affect its scent over time. These simple steps will keep your candle fresh and ready for its next glow.
12 / Time to say goodbye
When your candle has less than 1cm of wax left, it's time to say goodbye. For safety reasons, we recommend not relighting it at this stage. But the good news? Our candle jars are perfect for repurposing!

To clean them out, simply warm any remaining wax with a hairdryer, wipe it away with kitch roll, and then give the jar a wash in warm, soapy water. It's a lovely way to give your candle a second life - whether as a plant pot, pen holder, or a little storage jar.
13 / Soy wax - naturally better
We're proud to make all of our candles using sustainably sourced, natural soy wax. Our wax is biodegradable, free from additives and palm oil, and carefully sourced from trusted European suppliers. Just like with food, we believe what you breathe matters, which is why we never use paraffin wax or metallic wicks, both of which can release harmful toxins when burnt.

Soy wax is one of the slowest burning waxes around, which means you can enjoy your candle for longer, giving you more time to enjoy its scent and wellbeing benefits.

You might notice a little frosting on your candle from time to time - this is perfectly normal! It's simply the natural wax trying to return to its original form by forming tiny crystals. It's one of the ways you can tell your candle is 100% natural, and it won't affect how the candle burns.
12 / Handmade with care
We only use pure essential oils in our products - nothing artificial, just nature doing what it does best. Cheryl, our founder and aromatherapist, is deeply passionate about the powerful wellbeing benefits essential oils can offer. Used for thousands of years, essential oils are carefully distilled from plants, flowers, roots and leaves - and we thoughtfully blend them to create scents that not only smell beautiful but help support your mood and wellbeing too.

Wye Wicks began as a personal journey after our daughter experienced severe allergic reactions to the harsh chemicals found in some mass-produced candles. That experience led us to explore a gentler, more natural path - and it's one we've stayed true to ever since.

Unlike synthetic fragrance oils, which can contain unwanted additives like parabens and phthalates, essential oils are completely natural. We believe what you breathe matters - and just like paraffin wax fumes, synthetic nasties have no place in a healthy home. That's why we keep our ingredients simple, safe and kind - for you and your home.

Although the essential oils used in our products are highly diluted, some people and animals may be sensitive. Always check suitability before use, and if in doubt, seek appropriate medical or veterinary advice.
